Why do people open the oil cap when they are in a auto auction?

if smoke come out of your oil cap when open what does it meanWhy do people open the oil cap when they are in a auto auction?
Checking for moister due to a bad head gasket or cracked head. Smoke could indicate excessive blow by due to worn rings. Also by looking into the tappet cover for slug build up indicates infrequent oil changes.
To check and see if you have compression coming out of the fill cap. If you have oil blowing out which is called blowby the motor needs to be rebuilt as the rings on the pistons are shot. Why do people open the oil cap when they are in a auto auction?

If I was going to bid on a car at an auction, I'd be taking the oil cap off to look inside and see if the engine is full of sludge. This could be an indicator of how well the maintenance was kept up on the vehicle and it would effect my decision on if I wanted to bid on it or not. You can tell a lot by looking under the oil cap.
